Liferay PaaS - Liferay service doesn't start up - You must first upgrade the portal to the required schema version

Note: please note that Liferay has renamed its Liferay Experience Could offerings to Liferay SaaS (formerly LXC) and Liferay PaaS (formerly LXC-SM).

Issue

  • Liferay service does not start up/gets shut down after starting
  • The following error appears in the logs:
[dxp] ERROR [main][MainServlet:] You must first upgrade the portal to the required schema version

Environment

  • Liferay PaaS

Resolution

This error occurs when you try to connect a higher fixpack/version Liferay service to a database which has not been upgraded to that version.

  • If you want to keep your data: You must upgrade your database to the Liferay version you wish to use. Please see the following article for the required steps: Upgrading Your Liferay DXP Instance
  • If you don't want to keep the data: You can delete the Database service, redeploy and it should work. Please be aware: it will delete all your database data.
